Philanthropy and social entreprise: how to accelerate convergence?

For a long time, philanthropy was conceived as a charitable gift whereby the giver voluntarily relinquished funds with no strings attached beyond the moral satisfaction of doing something good. The receiver of the funds was either a needy person or a nonprofit organization catering to those needs. This common scheme has been challenged recently by two distinct trends. First, a growing number of philanthropists and foundations have come to see philanthropy as an investment, from which a social and even financial return is expected and impact is to be evaluated. Second, social enterprises of all kinds have addressed needs that were formerly the realm of charities and associations. Both trends complement more than they substitute for traditional charitable giving, yet they open new perspectives as financiers and entrepreneurs with a social mission are quickly converging. How far are we today? What obstacles remain? How can we foster this convergence?

Our guest speakers will be:

Jacques Defourny, Professor à HEC-Université de Liège,
Head of the Baillet Latour chair in Social Investment and Philanthropy

François Debiesse, Senior Adviser for BNP Paribas Wealth Management,
Chairman of the Fondation de l’Orangerie

The debate will be moderated by Anne-Claire Pache and Arthur Gautier,
from the ESSEC chair in Philanthropy.

The seminar will be held in French
