The impact of major events on corporate philanthropy - Tilcsik & Marquis
Given the local nature of corporate philanthropy, how do major events disrupting the life of communities affect the giving behavior of local companies?
In this 20th episode, Anne Monier, researcher at the ESSEC Philanthropy Chair, presents an article by Andras Tilcsik and Christopher Marquis entitled "Punctuated Generosity: How mega-events and Natural Disasters Affect Corporate Philanthropy in the U.S. Communities" (2013). Using corporate philanthropy data from the largest U.S. companies between 1980 and 2006, the authors analyze what might cause local corporate philanthropy to fluctuate, including the impact of events taking place within their territory.
This article presents the work of one of our Scientific Committee members, Christopher Marquis, and reminds us of the importance of studying philanthropy through the prism of territories and communities.
The three main ideas of the article:
Anne Monier highlights in this episode the three key ideas developed by the authors in the article:
Major events have a positive impact on generosity;
The impact of natural disasters on generosity varies according to their scale;
Other elements that can affect corporate generosity during mega-events are the company's record of philanthropy, its type of clients, but also the level of cohesion in the local business network and the strength of the local economy.
